Return Date Set for Touch Football Competitions

Townsville Touch Football has set sights on a return date of Sunday 12th July, after Friday’s release of the Queensland Government’s roadmap towards easing restrictions across the state.

While TTF had originally planned on a return to play in early June, the State Government’s refusal to open COVID-19 free regional areas of Queensland earlier than the southeast corner has resulted in further delay to community sport returning to normal until stage three of the roadmap comes into effect on 10 July.

TTF is now working to be on the front foot and ensure a full season of touch football can be played, starting with the recommencement from round 5 of the Colliers Shield Men’s & Women’s competition on Sunday 12th July.

Mixed touch football will return from Monday 13th July and the Veterans competitions from Tuesday 14th July, both recommencing from round 4 after completing three weeks of matches before lockdowns commenced earlier this year.

The adjusted senior touch football season will conclude with the Colliers Shield grand finals on Saturday 21st November, followed by the Mixed and Veterans finals on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th November, respectively.

With only a few rounds able to be played prior to lockdown commencing at the end of March, new players and teams will be eligible to enter all senior competitions.

The current junior mixed competition will not recommence, however the scheduled summer season of junior touch football will be extended to fourteen rounds, to start on Thursday 6th August (for ages 13 to 16), and Friday 7th August (for ages 6 to 12).

Grand finals for the junior competitions will remain unaltered, finishing as scheduled on Friday 4th December. The junior season will also break for the school holiday period in October.

With competitions being suspended since March 23, players are itching to get back onto the touch football field, and we want to ensure our community that we will do everything in our power to ensure they can do so safely from the day we are able to re-start.

TTF is working on a number of measures that will remain in place throughout the season to ensure the safety of our participants and will only lift those measures once advised it is safe to do so by the relevant authorities.

We are excited to see that some normality will soon be restored, and our players and officials can get back onto the field, however we must not become complacent over the next few weeks and risk having restrictions further extended.

We encourage all of our members as well as the wider community to continue practising social distancing and safe hygiene, and to follow all health and safety guidelines as advised by the state and federal health authorities.

We also strongly recommend that our members download and activate the Federal Government’s COVIDSafe app on their mobile devices, to ensure that any outbreaks are traced as soon as possible.

TTF competition staff will also shortly begin to work with teams and clubs to guide their return to the field, and expect an adjusted nomination process for new teams to be available in the coming weeks.

Clubs and teams now have plenty of time to begin preparations for the return of competition and will be advised in due course of any safety measures to be taken regarding training and competition.

Further information will be released on the Townsville Touch Football website – www.townsvilletouch.com – over the coming weeks as we approach the resume date.
